Basford Coronation Celebrations - June 02 1953

This photo of the children of Basford was taken on Coronation day in the field of Farmer Mr Percy Proudlove of Such Farm Basford. It was only about eight years after the end of World War II so it was not such a big surprise to see how the people of Basford joined forces in their bid to fund a grand Coronation party. Some people ran a football sweep, others organised a Whist Drive, profits all went into the fund.
Very few folk had a television in 1953, those who did only had one channel BBC 1. The Brazenhall family in Larch Avenue came up with a clever and kind way of boosting the fund, on certain evenings they allowed as many as fifteen children to pile into their front room to watch children's hour, charging 1d each. Mrs Lees from Larch avenue did a lot of sewing making the outfits for the band. Mr Ernie Whitlow was given the job of band leader and all us lads were given a bazooka each and told to practice a tune called "Blaze Away". There were a lot of patient parents in 1953.
Which brings me back to the photo, I could name almost all of the people on it who won some of the running races. Ken Pennall the well known Weight Lifter won the pillow fight on the greasy pole. Prior to this, of course, there was a Parade of some floats; our lad's band all with peaked caps and led by Mr Whitlow followed by various locals in fancy dress, many took part as I recall, possibly more in the Parade than spectators.
Miss Cynthia Merrill was crowned Coronation Queen and then this picture was taken. It was a memorable day thanks to all the people of Basford.
